![]() ![]() Experimenting with other worlds has made us take music really, really seriously because we know it’s the engine that made everything possible.īut it’s not like you didn’t mean it before. There’s no point in doing it half-heartedly. There’s a lot of pressure and a lot of things are happening now, so it was like this: “Well, if we’re going to make an album, we have to be really, really, really passionate about it. Tegan: When it came time to write “Crybaby” and focus on the album, we took writing the songs much more seriously. When we wrote the book (“High School”), we didn’t know what we were doing Now when we sit down to write new things, we feel like we understand (the process) better. I think every time we come up with a new track and tell stories in different ways, it helps strengthen our songwriting or strengthen our voices. We love talking about our past and talking about growing up. We’ve always had a blog, always had a mailing list. When we tour we like to literally tell stories on stage. Sara and I have always thought of ourselves as storytellers, so we use music as an opportunity to tell stories. Tegan: I know a lot of creatives who focus exclusively on one medium. ĭid the different projects influence each other? But we’re old school As soon as we got into the studio it was like, “Oh yeah, we’re going to make an album,” and before we knew it, “Crybaby” was done by Christmas last year and “High School” happened to be going into production around that time. We went into the studio thinking we’d just record a few songs and put them in different entities. When Sara didn’t have the script, she started writing. When I didn’t have the script, I wrote music. We wrote (the series and the novels) and passed them back and forth. Tegan: They all sort of flowed into each other. How does the “Crybaby” album fit into all of this? There was a lot of googling – How do you write a screenplay? So when Covid happened we were sort of relieved – not because of Covid but because we had time at home to tackle all these things. It was crazy We had never written a graphic novel before, never written fiction before, never written a screenplay before. You know, when Sara and I were writing the book High School, the children’s department (of Simon & Schuster Canada) asked us if we would consider writing a graphic novel about Tegan and Sara when they were younger and then give it a go fictionalize. Teagan: I know! (laughs) We can’t sit still. Obviously, you’ve just sat back and taken it easy during the pandemic. You can understand why Tegan is a little breathless on the phone from Vancouver, where she and Sara are “finishing some stuff” before heading out to court – well, all of that above… So while the world stood still, Tegan and Sara hit the gas pedal and got to work. Tegan and Sara, meanwhile, went back to the music writing pad for Crybaby, their 10th album, which was released on October 21st.Īnd, oh yes, they’re also writing a series of autobiographical graphic novels starting with Tegan and Sara: Junior High, which will be released on May 30th, followed by Tegan and Sara: Crush. ![]() The book is now the source material for the new Amazon Freevee series of the same name, which debuted in mid-October. The Calgary-born duo, who began their recording career in 2009, had solidified their musical base when 2019 released High School, Tegan and Sara’s best-selling memoir about growing up, coming out and evolving their craft. The Quin twins - better known as Tegan and Sara - have quietly become queens of all media over the past three years.
